Manuel, David
>> back to author list
In the past 29 years, David Manuel has written 27 books, including two ongoing best-sellers, The Light and the Glory, co-authored with historian Peter Marshall, and Medjugorje: the Message, in collaboration with Wayne Weible. In 1999, he shifted to fiction, launching the Faith Abbey Mystery series. The first, A Matter of Roses, received critical acclaim and prompted Time-Warner to pick up the paperback rights to it and the next two. A Matter of Diamonds came out in 2000, and A Matter of Time is due out this summer. The fourth, A Matter of Principle, is currently "in process" (look for it in hardcover next year). Next, he will start work with Peter Marshall on Crucible of Freedom, a major novel on Valley Forge, and somehow find time to produce a slim volume entitled Once Upon a Prayer: Adventures in the art of Listening to God.
From his days as an English major at Yale, Mr. Manuel had always dreamed of becoming a writer. But first he would serve four years in the Naval Air Force where, as a CIC officer and navigator, he logged 2,600 hours flight time on radar barrier patrols out of Newfoundland and Iceland. Next came eight years in the adult trade division of Doubleday, including three in Toronto as the first editor of Doubleday Canada. From there he went on to head up the book publishing division of Logos International until 1973, when he mustered the courage to try the other side of the editor's desk.
Mr. Manuel, his wife, daughter, son-in-law (and three granddaughters) are resident members of an ecumenical religious community on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. There, in his lighthouse office at the first light of day he can be found at his computer except on mornings when he leads a writing workshop, encouraging other would-be authors to believe the dream and persevere.
